DESIGN STATEMENT:

INTENTION:
The font I am designing will be used as a display typeface, the audience I aim to design this typeface for, will include furniture designers, graphic designers, or architects. These professionals will likely appreciate the mimicking of the shapes used in the mid-century aesthetic. This typeface is aimed to portray vintage characteristics. It will used in lower case format, with a heavy weight, and a focus on the negative space between each letter form. This will be a modular typeface; using limited amounts of shapes to build each letter form.

FORM / FUNCTION:

Undulate is bold, thick in width, clear and concise. This typeface mimics the appearance of furniture, interiors
and graphics from the mid century period. Mid century modern design is most commonly filled with curved shapes and clean lines, I have transformed this aesthetic into a typeface, this has been done by creating new un-even shapes from the curved letter forms. This is a modular typeface, as I am repeating many of the symbols to create new letter forms. The repeating of letter forms and symbols is very important when using this type face, as the shapes need to be uniform, this is what defines this typeface
as modular. These curved forms create a very organic feeling, they are not perfectly rounded, nor they are square, this produces a ‘squond’ feeling.

‘Undulate’ meaning: move or go with a smooth up-and down motion.

MOCK UPS:

MOOD BOARD INSPIRATION:

I am taking Inspiration from the Mid-Century modern aesthetic which is very focussed on a mixture of straight and curved  lines. This inspiration is drawn from furniture design, as well as interior design and older graphic design patterns.
